Introduktion
Gender roles affect both men and women. Men are supposed to be big and strong, dominant, masculine, and tough as a person, while a woman is supposed to be soft, caregiving, weak and emotional.
We think we are not affected by the old fashion stereotypes in today's society. But how is it that the majority of times when the children are sick, it is the woman who stays home from work to take care of the children?
Why do we still have gender roles in today's society?
Utdrag
And I want it to be spring and I want to brush my hair out in front of a mirror and I want a kitty and I want some new clothes.’ ‘Oh, shut up and get something to read,’ George said…” (Hemingway, N.D, p.66) ‘.
This quote gives an excellent example of the manly dominants under the 20th century, but why was it this way?
It is because men have always had a decisive advantage and a more powerful position in society.
Although women could have jobs, it was consistently lower-paid jobs. Because stereotypically, women weren't as big and strong as men, employers didn't believe women could do the same job because they were weaker and, therefore, got lower-paying jobs.
For example, if men worked in transport, women did work as maids. If a man worked within machine service, the woman worked in childcare.
In addition, around this time, new laws were introduced that limited women's work, which resulted in the woman being dependent on the man and putting the man in a position of power.
We still see this today in modern society when women can have the same job but for a lower salary. Women can be higher educated than men but still be less paid.
