In this essay I am going to write from the perspective of my profession as a medical doctor. It is not a new profession but has been defined in different terms in history with different healing methods for the sick.

So different types of societies can both increase and decrease certain illnesses but today we have a modern scientific approach to tackle these issues that differ from before.

In the middle ages the cause of sickness and illness was related to religion. The cause of the plague was a result of god punishing the people for not being devoted enough to him

and simultaneously there was no enlightenment and modern science, this is especially true for middle ages in Europe.

At the same time period the Islamic golden age was developing new scientific methods to heal the sick.

Other societies from the past to the present still do this day use “shaman” and traditional herbs and medicine which historically have been the most common treatment for both mental and physical illness.
