Earth faces a multitude of challenges, with food waste emerging as one of the most pressing issues. Astonishingly, an average individual discards approximately 15-20% of their food annually.

In Denmark, our annual food wastage surpasses a staggering 700,000 tons. It's a disheartening fact that the food currently squandered in Europe could satiate the hunger of 200 million people.

As we look to the future, with the world's population expected to reach 9 billion by 2050, the necessity to bolster food production by 70% to meet these demands becomes increasingly apparent.

The composition of this wastage is revealing: 36% comprises fruits and vegetables, 25% bakery products, 16% long-lasting foods, 16% meat and meat products, and 7% dairy products.

Notably, food waste in the United States has surged by 50% since the 1970s, primarily driven by expanding portion sizes and the normalization of excess in restaurant menus and consumer purchasing habits.

This predicament raises a profound question: can we truly afford such wastage when over 7 billion people inhabit our planet, with 925 million of them enduring hunger?

Annually squandering and losing 1.3 billion tons of food – enough to nourish 3 billion people – underscores the urgency of reducing food losses and waste. It is a critical imperative, even in the face of worldwide hunger affecting several thousand families.

However, what are the repercussions of our actions? It's essential to acknowledge that our excessive consumption has dire consequences, not only in terms of the resources expended but also the environmental toll it takes.

Consider this: a staggering 15,000 liters of water are utilized to produce just one kilogram of beef. This stark fact highlights that when we discard a packet of beef, we squander an enormous amount of precious water resources unnecessarily.

Despite the concerning levels of food wastage, Denmark has made commendable progress in curbing this trend.
