History
The origin tale dates back to 1947, unfolding on a picturesque beach in Wales, where Range Rover's Technical Director, Maurice Wilks, and his brother, Spencer Wilks, who happened to be Rover's Managing Director, sketched out a vision.
The catalyst for this vision was their experience with a Jeep on the Wilks family farm in Anglesey, where the undeniable need for a reliable and rugged off-road vehicle became crystal clear.
This ingenious creation blended a Jeep frame with a Land Rover car engine, featuring straightforward body panels crafted from lightweight materials and a frame ingeniously fashioned from surplus material.
This resourceful approach not only circumvented the constraints of rationed steel but also eliminated the need for complex and costly press tools.
Fast forward to the Amsterdam Motor Show a mere year later, and Land Rover made its grand debut, captivating the audience and garnering resounding acclaim.
In a remarkable turn of events, within just six months, Rover realized that their initially conceived 'stop-gap' product was poised to outsell all their other offerings.
By year's end, Land Rovers were making their way to eager customers in approximately 70 countries worldwide.
