Introduktion
Emanuel Melo, a Toronto-based writer of Azorean descent, penned the poignant short story "The Weekly Visit" as a personal endeavor to grapple with the dual aspects of loss and gain associated with a diasporic existence.
His unique background, characterized by dual nationality, profoundly influences his writing style and serves as the catalyst for his literary journey.
Melo's works often feature characters and settings imbued with a Portuguese or multilingual essence, a characteristic also evident in "The Weekly Visit."
This narrative explores themes of self-centeredness and inadequate communication, and in this analysis, I will delve into the story's characterization, themes, and underlying message.
Utdrag
The weekly visits that were once an act of love have now become a source of annoyance for Jake. What was once a heartfelt gesture has transformed into a burden and an obligatory task.
“His heart is rigidly cold against her and he himself does not really understand how it got to be this way.” As a reader, it might be tempting to view Jake as an unsympathetic and emotionally numb individual who simply cannot love his mother.
However, this isn't the whole truth, as Jake is painfully and shamefully aware of his present predicament. This awareness reveals that Jake isn't a completely callous and unfeeling person.
He grapples with a deep sense of guilt over recognizing his mother as a source of pain and difficulty rather than one of his closest loved ones.
“Eu gosto tanto de ti,” she whispers into his ear but hearing her say that she loves him so much only makes him feel guilty and ashamed of his behaviour.”
However, if Jake were truly callous and unfeeling, he would have severed all ties with his mother and moved on with his life.
Instead, Jake grapples with two divergent and conflicting emotions toward his mom, which are quite evident. On one hand, he retains a fondness and affection for her, as evidenced by the statement, "He did love her before and maybe he still does but he's so tired that he no longer feels it."
On the other hand, he perceives her as exceedingly manipulative. “It’s like this with everything. She can manipulate any statement he says, she can twist anything he says so that she comes out being right.”
