Lester Billings is the main character in the story. He is a 28-year-old man who had a bad marriage and three children who died.
Dr. Harper, the psychologist, describes him as haggard, with a receding hairline and an obvious drinking problem. He was born in 1944 and nurtured in a household where the husband was the absolute authority.
He frequently employs racial terms such as nigger and gook, indicating to the reader that he is a racist or was raised in a time when black people were considered inferior.
This can be found on pages 25 and 28 line 40. Lester describes his mother as judgemental and overprotective. Lester is not the picture of a perfect father and spouse.
Lester murders his three children, but he blames it on an imaginary monster known as the boogeyman, according to the account. This can be seen on pages 22 l.2 and 24 ll. 8-9.
Lester appears paranoid and maybe insane while describing the circumstances of his children's deaths (pp.22-23, ll. 12-15).
