Introduktion
Summary
"Cora unashamed" by Langston Hughes is a short story about the main character Cora Jenkins. She is an African American woman and a member of the only black family in Melton, who works for an established white family called the Studevant family.

She is their housekeeper, who also looks after their youngest daughter Jessie. Cora is very close with Jessie, and that's because of her loss of her daughter, who was the same age as Jessie.

Therefore, Jessie is just like her daughter. Jessie falls in love and becomes pregnant. Her mother refuses to allow Jessie to have the child, so she forces Jessie to get an abortion.

Jessie dies of grief. Finally, at the funeral, Cora speaks up about how Jessie died, but she gets removed from the funeral by force, and therefore she decides to leave the Studevant family.

Utdrag
Set in the drab and unremarkable town of Melton, Iowa, in the year 1933, the story immerses us in a monotonous existence.

Within this uninspiring backdrop, Cora and her family, the sole African Americans in the community, struggle with profound poverty.

The characters in the tale, with Cora at the helm, are richly woven into the narrative. "Cora Unashamed" employs a past-tense narrative style, narrated from a limited third-person perspective.

This approach grants us glimpses into the inner thoughts and emotions of Cora and select supporting characters.

The narrator selectively reveals modest details about these supporting roles, inviting readers to infer the rest, fostering a deeper connection with the characters.

Through Cora's life experiences and interactions with others, Hughes paints a vivid portrait of what it might have been like for a black woman in 1930s American society.

The narrative serves as a stark commentary on the prejudice and inequity that pervaded American society, particularly towards individuals of African descent.

Hughes masterfully employs Cora's journey to shed light on the injustice that plagued black Americans during this challenging era.

In the employ of the Studevants, Cora endured treatment akin to that of a subjugated creature. This poignant portrayal highlights the glaring injustices that marred society during those times.
