Anne Cassidy's tale, "Shopping Solo," unfolds the story of Jean, a UN employee, who finds herself in a grocery store queue.
Standing behind two young women, one with blonde hair and the other with dark locks, Jean becomes an inadvertent eavesdropper to their conversation.
The conversation revolves around a woman and her partner, someone the dark-haired lady claims to have seen at a family gathering.
The blonde companion mostly nods in agreement until she drops a bombshell – the dark-haired lady's partner made advances toward her.
The dark-haired woman's partner had been unfaithful, but he returned with an apology. Jean can't help but feel uneasy, especially since her few grocery items seem to signify her single status as she listens in on this conversation.
She observes not only the two women in front of her but also the other shoppers around her, most of whom are buying for their families, intensifying her discomfort.
She briefly glances at a self-help book for singles but lacks the courage to purchase it, reminiscing about the days when she and her partner used to embark on adventures together.
