Over the past decade, sustainability has evolved into a global focal point, a topic that permeates diverse settings — from everyday conversations at local grocery stores to high-stakes discussions among world leaders convened at the United Nations.

However, despite these affirmations, the subsequent years have witnessed a remarkable reversal. In 2016, the U.S. transitioned from the Obama administration to the presidency of Donald Trump, who orchestrated the nation's formal withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement.

The United States and China, as major contributors to global CO2 emissions, jointly accounting for over 40% of the world's emissions, stunned the international community by this unexpected decision.

The Paris Agreement, also known as COP21 (21st Conference of the Parties), symbolized a collective commitment to reducing emissions.

The U.S. had pledged to cut emissions by 26-28% relative to 2005 levels by 2025. Regrettably, this commitment was upended by the Trump administration's withdrawal.

Donald Trump's stance on climate change was unequivocal: he cast doubt on its very existence, even once asserting that "climate change was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive" — a statement he later dismissed as a jest.

In the years of Trump's presidency, from 2017 onward, U.S. carbon (CO2) emissions increased by 3.48%, as per data from the World Development Indicators.

The landscape changed once more in 2021 when Donald Trump left office and Joseph Biden assumed the presidency. Since then, the U.S. has resolutely reentered the climate arena.

In November 2021, at the COP26 climate summit, President Biden declared the U.S.'s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50% to 52% by 2030, compared to 2005 levels.

Biden's administration has ushered the world's largest economy and second-largest emitter back into the Paris Agreement.
