I'm Nicole Smith, aged 18, and I'd like to extend my gratitude to the London Mayor for hosting this event, which tackles an incredibly vital issue.

As a politically engaged student, I've been entrusted with the task of delivering a speech, sharing my perspective on the London Riots situation.

This topic has sparked extensive debate, and I wholeheartedly recognize its significance. It's imperative that we address this issue earnestly and work towards preventing any recurrence.

Reflecting on the events of August 2011, we witnessed a substantial group, primarily composed of young individuals, adopting a destructive approach that inflicted harm upon our nation.

It all stemmed from the tragic incident involving Mark Duggan, a young black man fatally shot by the police. This incident was profoundly distressing, particularly as it marked the genesis of our current circumstances.

The aftermath saw a surge of people resorting to vandalism and theft, leading to extensive damage to streets and neighborhoods.

Irrespective of the motivations behind these riots, it's a matter that demands our utmost attention. We must strive for a society where everyone can move about in public spaces without fear.

Innocent lives have been lost as a result of these riots, and this is unquestionably one of the most distressing aspects of the entire ordeal.

The riots we confront today do not solely impact those actively involved but have a ripple effect that extends to all of us, encompassing our entire society.

In 2011, when these riots began, youth unemployment soared to 19%, leading to significant economic challenges for the nation. However, the question concerning these young participants begs an examination of responsibility.
