Introduktion
Hello, I'm Kate Johnson, currently in my third year at Westmore High School. It's great to be here with all of you today.

Our focus for today revolves around "UK Challenges," and I'll be delving into a significant issue within the UK – poverty.

Firstly, I'll delve into the growing concerns surrounding poverty in the UK. Secondly, I'll explore diverse perspectives on this issue, and lastly, I'll examine the potential outcomes resulting from the current austerity measures.

Utdrag
Today, roughly 1.5 million people find themselves with less than £10 a day after accounting for housing costs.

This meager sum barely suffices to put food on the table, and it's a disconcerting reality for a substantial portion of our population, including children.

The impact of poverty is especially harsh on our young ones. Children face significant developmental challenges, encompassing mental, educational, and physical facets.

Learning becomes an uphill battle when they lack a proper night's rest or a nutritious breakfast. Some schools across the country have stepped in, offering affordable breakfast options to ensure that students can at least start their day satiated, providing them with a better shot at succeeding academically.

Once upon a time, in my previous school, there was a young boy, just seven years old. Each day, he trudged to school, his stomach empty and his energy depleted.

His mother was unwell, and his father had abandoned them when the boy was merely two years old. After school, this resilient young soul dedicated himself to assisting his ailing mother, leaving him with scarce time and energy for his own homework.

Every day was a relentless battle to secure a meal for their meager table. Most often, he offered what little food they had to his sick mother, leaving little for himself.

In a society seemingly indifferent to their plight, how were they expected to survive? It appeared that no one was extending a helping hand to this boy and his mother.

In the cities of Manchester and Liverpool, nearly one in two children grows up in the clutches of poverty. This grim statistic sets in motion a cycle wherein poverty is inherited by the next generation, perpetuating a troubling trend, especially in a society where welfare support continues to dwindle.
