Introduktion
In everyone's life, there comes a moment when they undergo the transition from childhood to adulthood. It's a significant step that can be both intimidating and disillusioning for some.
The harsh realities of the world suddenly intrude, making you realize that the superheroes of your childhood, whether they were your parents, other family members, or teachers, cannot always shield you.
This moment of awakening remains etched in your memory, much like the main character's experience in "Superman and Paula Brown's New Snowsuit," a short story by Sylvia Plath written in 1955.
The story portrays the recollections of an adult woman reflecting on her upbringing during World War II.
Utdrag
The main character, a grown woman looking back on her childhood, recalls her time as a fifth-grader.
During her childhood, she, like most children, is curious and often finds herself in situations that force her out of her fantastical childhood world and into the stark reality of life.
The prevailing backdrop of the real world that profoundly affects her is the war: "Every now and then we would practice an air raid." (Plath, p. 155).
The war has a significant impact on the children's lives, and the main character's curiosity places her in front of a war film instead of watching "Snow White" like the other children at the birthday party.
The film leaves a lasting impression on her perception of the world: "I was sitting on the aisle, and I stood up then in a hurry and ran out to the girls' room where I knelt over a toilet bowl and vomited up the cake and ice cream." (Plath, p. 156).
Besides making her physically ill, the film symbolizes the loss of her childhood innocence, as the act of consuming ice cream and cake at a birthday party, a quintessential childhood experience, is expelled from her body simultaneously with her innocence.
Another pivotal event in the story is the soiling of Paula Brown's new snowsuit. The main character, innocent and merely in the wrong place at the wrong time, becomes the scapegoat for the incident.
