Why are horror stories (or horror films) like Frankenstein so popular? What is it about this genre that appeals to so many people?

In my personal opinion the genre creates and adds to the mood similar to other genres but in its own way. Watching a scary movie can make you feel scared and being scared with your friends always makes it more fun.

After creating the creature, Frankenstein has a vision of his wife dying and his late mother. On top of that his creature murders two people as an act of revenge.

This can be viewed as Frankenstein's punishment for “playing God” by giving life to the creature.
