Biological approach is one of the ways that researchers study the brain in relation to behavior. One technique used in this approach is Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).
MRI is used to produce images of the living brain and can be used to study both normal and abnormal areas of the brain. It is also used for early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.
An example of a study using MRI to study the brain in relation to behavior is a study conducted by Maguire.
The aim of the study was to investigate whether neuroplasticity can be seen in the brains of London taxi drivers as a result of the amount of time they have been driving through the streets of London.
The method used was a quasi-experiment. The researcher used an MRI to study the structure of the brain and a sample of 16 right-handed healthy taxi drivers and 50 right-handed healthy non-taxi drivers. The hypothesis was that the repeated use of the brain for spatial memory would result in neuroplasticity.
The results of the study showed that the taxi drivers had a larger right posterior hippocampus than the non-taxi drivers, and the non-taxi drivers had a larger anterior hippocampus than the taxi drivers.
